Colne Valley Music Centre

Colne Valley Music Centre string group

Colne Valley Music Centre dates back to the transition from West Riding Of Yorkshire to Kirklees Metropolitan Council, between April and September 1974.

Robert Bamforth guided the Music Centre through this transition and remained head of the Centre until his retirement in April 1991, apart from September 1984 to October 1986 when he was acting head of Kirklees Music Centre Instrumental Music Service.

Between April 1991 and September 1992, Ralph Barker was acting head of Colne Valley Music Centre. He was succeeded by Pat France from September 1992 to July 1995, who was Area Manager for the Colne Valley Music Centre. This position has been held by Ralph Barker since September 1995.

How long before my child can join?

This is dependent on ability rather than how long they've been learning, but on average, they should be able to join a junior group after approximately one year.

How old does my child have to be?

It is dependent on ability rather than age but Junior groups normally cater for Junior/Infant school children.

For how long would my child stay in each group?

This depends upon their progress, and to some extent their age. (A 13 year old would feel out of place in a Junior group.)

How often do the groups/bands perform and is there a special uniform to wear?

The groups rehearse once a week during term time. There is normally a concert at the end of the Autumn term. Most groups take part in the National Festival Auditions in March and Hornsea/National Festivals in July. Groups are often Invited to other events.

The uniform for strings is a blue CVMC T-shirt and black trousers. For bands it is a white shirt, black trousers and a blue bow tie for the boys, and a white blouse with a long blue skirt for the girls.

How much practice is expected of the members of the groups?

It depends on specific aims, sometimes practice is not required between rehearsals unless requested specifically by the conductor. Prior to main events, some help may be needed from the students' teachers.

Does the Music Centre have any instruments available for loan?

Yes, mostly brass and woodwind.
