Shelley Music Centre

Shelley is a vibrant and friendly music centre with a wide range of ensembles performing to a high standard.  There is a large communal area where tea, coffee and toast are served, as well as a tuck shop for pupils to enjoy during the breaks.  Parents are welcome to sit in and listen to the ensembles or you can enjoy a hot drink from the coffee bar.  We rehearse at Shelley Technology College (formerly Shelley High School) on Saturday mornings during term time from 9:00am to 12:15pm.

Big Band - directed by Mr Mansfield

Shelley Music Centre Big Band are a youth jazz ensemble who enjoy performing a wide range of big band music, from latin and rock jazz to classic swing and vocal charts. They are in great demand locally, performing at 40's nights, beer festivals, charity balls and more formal concerts. They have recently performed at the regional and national Music for Youth festivals and received very positive feedback. They have also produced their first album "The Good, the Phat and the Phunky", available from the Music Centre.  Below are some links to a couple of the tracks from the CD that we have uploaded to Youtube with a slideshow of photos of the band.  Please note, by clicking on the links below you will be taken to an external website.

As with all the SMC groups there are no auditions and pupils attend on the recommendation of their teacher. At present there are 65 members in the band aged from 12 to 18 years old. In addition to performing at KMS and SMC concerts throughout the year the SWB have regularly taken part in the Regional Festival of Music for Youth and were invited to perform at the National Festival at Symphony Hall in Birmingham in July 2012.

Guitar Ensemble – conducted by Mr Batchelar

The Shelley Music Centre Guitar Ensemble is for players of approximately Grade 1 standard and above. Having lessons in school is an essential first step, but all musicians need the experience of playing with others if they are to achieve their full potential. Playing in a group compliments and enhances the tuition that children receive in school as well as providing a fun social aspect to their musical education. There are two main concerts and further performance opportunities such as open mornings and performances in local churches and at festivals.

Recorder Ensemble - conducted by Mrs Mansfield

Shelley Music Centre Recorder group caters for all ages from 9 - adult. We play a wide range of music to suit all tastes and there are opportunities to play all types of recorder. Players need to have learnt for approx. one year before joining.
Come and give us a go on Saturday mornings from 8.30 - 9.00am, even if it is a few decades since you last played!

Enjoyment always takes precedent!

Senior Strings - conducted by Mrs Wise

SMC Senior strings caters for String players of Grade 5 standard and above. Repertoire is very varied with pieces each term consisting of a Classical works, right through to modern works. There is always something for every group members taste throughout the year. The group also plays a part in deciding the works the wish to study and perform, depending on strengths and weaknesses that they may wish to build on, or quite simple a piece that they want to play. Whilst the groups approach is more serious, the emphasis is still very much placed on enjoyment.
