KMS Tutor at Oxford University

Saturday January 7th saw KMS woodwind and percussion teacher Iain Harrison present a paper at the SPEEC conference, University of Oxford. Iain's paper was entitled 'There are neither wholes nor parts: the genesis of a performance technique, and the development of an intuitive system of notation for saxophone multiphonic manipuulations' and was delivered in collaboration with composer Scott McLaughlin.

Mr Harrison is a saxophonist and teacher living in the north of England and has worked with  saxophonists such as Stephen Mauk, Andy Scott, Dave O’Higgins and Frank Gratkowski. He has also had the opportunity to work alongside composers of new music such as Christopher Fox, James Saunders, Phill Niblock, Christian Wolff and Larry Austin. Iain has a particular interest in interpreting and working with extended techniques which he is familiar with both in notated and in improvised music. In 2007 Iain started working with composer and laptop manipulator Scott McLaughlin and their duo “Apropos” have enjoyed performances in festivals and venues across Europe.

As well as working for Kirklees Music School Mr Harrison is currently in the final stage of completing a PhD in "advanced saxophone technique and it's use in contemporary music" at Huddersfield University.
